Title: Downtown Student Housing

The Idea: Encourage graduate students to live downtown by enticing UD and WSU to subsidize rent in a renovated building. Picture something like the Cannery lofts, an upscale urban living area, where a discount is given to students going to school who want to rent downtown. The law and med students already work downtown, and creating a livable, affordable space encourages a community environment, and will put more money into local business and restaurants. Renovating a currently unused building will increase the urban beautification in the area.

OK this a perfect Idea! Actually if City Government had the “sand” to be more innovative and could actually think out of a bocx for a change, they would figure out a way to create Municipal Student Housing (New Construction) at economical prices. Student Housing in Downtown Dayton for around $700 per month would not only be bold and daring but it surely could generate revenue for this ailing poorly managed city. Also by innitiating this type of business model we then could of course bring in BigBox Retail and extend downtown shopping hours. Close that “Bodega” next to the Arcade and do something than another parking garage for PMI.

Downtown student housing would be great between the University of Dayton and Sinclair. High rise student housing in downtown would support the Arts, and bring in more income tax. Raising the population downtown would support local businesses and restaurants. It might bring more skilled construction jobs.

Great idea. Perhaps some private developers might do it…
the sell to them is a) lock in longer term leases (2-3 years for law/med/business students)
b) quiet/studious tenants with guaranteed income (loans)
c) goodwill with community/schools
d) potential long term customers

Downtown Dayton is home to many attractive buildings that are in dire need to be used. As a full time student at Sinclair Community College, I constantly think about ways to better downton Dayton and Sinclair at the same time. I think Sam is on the right track about attracting student to live downtown housing by developing student housing yet getting students from UD and WSU doesn’t seem too plausible because UD already has plenty of housing and WSU is a far drive from downtown Dayton.
Sinclair has over twenty thousand students attending the college and is over flowing with potential for student housing. With students practically in every income bracket, there could be a wide variety of housing plans.
As I walk around downtown and pass many vacant buildings, the question I ask myself know is, “Why has no one done this yet?”
