Activated Spaces :: Call for Artists to Fill Downtown Storefronts

March 3rd, 2011  |  Published in News, On The Wall  |  4 Comments

Starting last January, volunteers from Generation Dayton, updayton and around the community have been working together with the GREATer Downtown Dayton Plan to bring vibrancy to the first-level storefronts in downtown Dayton. The group is moving fast – volunteers are already looking for artists to help spruce-up downtown’s curb appeal. Click below to view application info:

Call for Artists: Street Level Displays

Displays will be themed and their look will be refreshed periodically, allowing new artists to display their talent, or offer a chance for established artists to show off their dynamic range. The first installation theme is “Celebrating Dayton.” Included at the link above is a suggested list of festivals and local cultural celebrations that visually demonstrate the Dayton region’s heritage and diversity. To learn more, contact Sean Turner at smturner@turnerpsg.com.

Art not your thing? In addition to the street level art project, two other teams are working complementary strategies to activate storefronts downtown. Volunteers are considering programs for short-term stores, such as pop-up retail shops, seasonal shops, testing grounds for entrepreneurs, or spaces for learning exercises with business students at local colleges. Look for more info on these projects as volunteers firm-up their plans in the coming months.
