Title: Bibliotecha
The Idea: Dayton is already known for it’s incredible system of public libraries, but what if Dayton was home to the best public library EVER? My idea is to combine a library and gymnasium together to create a modern, new center for personal growth and development for every citizen of Dayton! The building would have to be beautiful to look at, well-designed in decoration and construction and In light of current ecological conditions, it would also take advantage of new advances in green technology to be virtually self-sufficient through the use of specially designed solar panels and, if possible, a system that converts the energy people expend while exercising on the gym’s equipment into elecricity to store in generators to be used later.
The library itself will have an extensive, up-to-date collection of books provided by donations from public and private sorces (I would suggest a book drive where contributors can write their names and a dedication on the inside of the books they donate, or businesses can place ads). A small coffee shop inside would add to the library’s appeal, and the cost for that could surely be covered by contracting out to a coffee company. In the current library system their isn’t much privacy while you’re at the computer, most of the time their is someone sitting right next to you. My idea is to have laptops people can check out and use to access the internet or library system through a wireless connection anywhere in the building. This will allow people more privacy and freedom; best of all, people could just bring in their own laptops and access the system if they wanted to. An on-site daycare would make the library a sanctuary for parents in school who otherwise could not find the ! time to study or exercise.
The gym will have new equipment, and like I stated above, if possible, this equipment would connect to generators that help run the building to reduce emmissions. I’m not sure if this is possible, but wouldn’t that be amazing? The first human-powered building. Get fit and help your community and environment at the same time!
An idea like this may seem rather extravagent in today’s money-strapped economy, but the project would pay for itself through the sale of advertisment space, promotions, and donations. If needed, I’m sure a small membership fee could be added. A place like this would bring our community closer, it’s a place where young and old alike can have fun side-by-side, and where children can play safe. It would create new jobs and perhaps bring some more tourists dollars to Dayton. In closing, this revolutionary new way of looking at a library could open up a new chapter for Dayton!

You’re right, internet stations aren’t very private and yet hobos STILL look at porn and masturbate in the library! What would happen if you gave them a laptop they could hide in the corner with? Your library would not be a family friendly or safe place… at all. I could only imagine how many woman would be raped my worked up hobos who have been staring at porn on their borrowed laptops.
